Chapter 3: A Used Car Lemon Story

Date: 02/20/1999

For a while, the used car salesman told potential buyers that the car was a rental, and of course it didn’t sell. It stayed on the lot for a year.

This is a illegal in California.

Ms. Peters arrived and purchased the car. The salesman did not mention that the car had been a rental.

Used Car Warranties

Ms. Peters received two warranties:

The dealer provided a 30-day, 1,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty that included parts and labor.
The manufacturer’s original new car warranty, which was for 3 years or 36,000 miles, was still in force.
Date: 04/20/1999
Mileage = 18,000

As mentioned, the car had 18,000 miles on the odometer when Ms. Peters purchased it. A balance of 18,000 miles and about eight months remained on the new motor vehicle warranty.

Used Car: First Repair Attempt

As Ms. Peters drove away, she noticed that there was a pronounced engine knock and a pinging noise. She drove the car back to the dealer a few days later. She had driven the car 400 miles.

Mileage = 18,400

She tried to impress on them that she was working two jobs and absolutely had to have the car. She described the problem. The service writer said: "Honey, are you sure you are using the right kind of gas?"
