Chapter 3: A Used Car Lemon Story

As she drove away, the car pinged and knocked as it had from the moment she bought it. She continued to use the car. What else could she do?

Used Car: Fourth Repair Attempt

Nine months later the car became so weak Ms. Peters was afraid to drive it up a hill. It felt like it was going to stall at any moment. Ms. Peters took the vehicle back to the dealer. She pleaded with the mechanic to do something about it, so he took the car and wrote up another repair order.

The car remained in the shop for two weeks. This was very difficult for Ms. Peters. There was considerable additional expense.

When the service manager called to tell her to pick up the car, she asked what they had found. The service manager said they had found no problem, but that it was time for a tune-up. She had to pay $350 for a tune-up that she hadn’t asked for, and that didn’t fix the problem.

Used Car: Fifth Repair Attempt

The car continued to knock and ping. When Ms. Peters turned off the engine, it kept running, making a terrible racket.

This is a condition called dieseling.

Eleven months later, she was again able to take the car to the dealer. The service manager was standing there when she drove up. After she shut off the engine, it continued to run, knocking and pinging loudly. This time the service manager didn’t make any snide remarks but just wrote up the repair order. Once again, Ms. Peters arranged for a ride home.
