Introduction to the Need for Lemon Law
People can make all the negative comments they like about there being too many laws, but countries without these protections are sorry places to live. True, if every manufacturer always stood behind its products unconditionally, there would be no need for lemon laws. Instead, every state in the union has some kind of lemon law to protect its citizens from living with defective vehicles. This confirms that there is a need to protect consumers. Manufacturers left to their own devices will not do the right thing.
The need for any set of laws to control corporate behavior speaks poorly of the individuals in charge. But for the consumer to be without these laws would at best lead to an incredible waste of time and money, and at worst prove hazardous to life and limb. |
By itself, a defective automobile might seem like a small thing. It is certainly not as significant as war, famine, or the injustices done to whole peoples. However, as an example of a national corporate disease in an industrial age, it is not a small thing. It is no accident that so many people find themselves with a lemon. For every effect, there is a cause.
The Right Way to Handle a Defect
When manufacturers produce defective vehicles that they cannot repair, reason and ethics suggest that they should acknowledge the defect, replace the vehicle, and get on with their business, taking pains to correct the defect in later models.
