Chapter 6: Manufacturer-Dealership Relationship

How Do I Find Out About a Secret Warranty?

Good luck! They are usually very difficult to discover, and manufacturers often deny the existence of secret warranties.

To find a secret warranty, check through the TSBs for your model vehicle that authorize the dealer to make repairs at the manufacturer’s expense.

You can start by checking the Technical Service Bulletins2 (TSBs) at your dealer’s office for your vehicle model and year. The existence of a TSB does not necessarily mean that the manufacturer has a secret warranty. It does signal that the manufacturer is aware of a recurring, widespread defect or problem.

Although TSBs can be hard to decipher, the key is to find one that authorizes the dealer to make repairs at the manufacturer’s expense, even when the defect is not covered under warranty. For example, watch for code words such as Check for availability of goodwill assistance.
