Chapter 6: Manufacturer-Dealership Relationship

Is Disclosure of Secret Warranties Required?

A very few states, including California, require manufacturers to

• notify by mail all owners affected by a warranty adjustment policy;

• make available upon request the applicable TSBs;

• provide for reimbursement to consumers who have already paid for the covered repair.

Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If you don’t ask about these things, the manufacturer will never tell you voluntarily.

Don’t depend on manufacturers to do this voluntarily. Sometimes they "forget."

The Flat-Rate Pay System for Technicians

The vast majority of dealerships in the United States pay their technicians according to a flat-rate pay system.

• Service Labor Time Standards are how Ford determines the length of time that should be spent on any warranty or recall repair. All car manufacturers have some similar method of determining how long they think a particular repair should take.

• Manufacturers print labor time manuals. These manuals define warranty repair time standards for every possible kind of repair.

• Time standards are set for each job and are rounded to the nearest tenth of an hour. For instance, the standard for replacement of an ignition module on a particular car may be 1.1 hours. This means that, no matter how long it takes the technician to change that module, the manufacturer pays for 1.1 hours.
