It is a vehicle that has been repurchased by a manufacturer of vehicles, from 1 January 1996, because of specified warranty defect (s). The vehicle is registered in the name of the manufacturer before resale.
What is required from the manufacturer?
•The manufacturer on the repurchase of a vehicle specified warranty defect (s) must:
• Application for Certificate of Title and Registration Certificate marked "Lemon Law buyback.
• Title of the vehicle manufacturer's name.
• The manufacturer shall attach a sticker on the vehicle. The decal reading "Lemon Law buyback" and placed in:
• Left door frame or
• Framework of the main entrance on the vehicle as part of the right front door of a trailer.
• The left side of a vehicle without doors, like a motorcycle.

Additional Requirements
• When you sell a warranty return vehicle, the assignee must be notified, on letter size paper, the following:
• The year, make, model and vehicle identification number.
• That the vehicle title is marked "Lemon Law buybacks."
• The nature of each nonconformity reported by the original buyer or lessee.
• Repairs, if any, made to the vehicle in an attempt to correct each nonconformity.
How will I know if a vehicle was a lemon?
Time to display the decal described above. See Certificate of Title and Vehicle Registration Certificate to see if it is branded, "Lemon Law buyback. Ask the dealer or seller if the vehicle was a buyback of the Lemon Law. He is obliged by law to disclose this information.
What do I need if I buy a lemon law vehicle purchase?
You will be notified before buying a lemon buyback vehicle by the seller in writing of the nonconformities reported by the previous owner.
If you decide to purchase the vehicle, the usual transfer documents and charges associated with the following requirements:
• Certificate of Title, duly endorsed for transfer.
• Transfer fee.
• Sales / Use Tax, if applicable.
• Smog Certification.
• Odometer Disclosure Statement.
• The items listed are the usual transfer requirements. Renewal fees shall be, if the application is filed within 30 days from the date of expiry of registration. Additional items and / or rates may be needed depending on the type of transfer request.
• You may telephone your DMV office at 1-800-777-0133 for the exact documents and fees required to complete your transaction.
