A bill that would allow subscribers to leave their mobile phone contracts without penalty has been approved by the Illinois State House. The law allows consumers to break their contracts without an ETF if they have experienced phone problems "more than three times." Similar to other so-called "lemon laws", the project is designed to protect consumers from having to pay for services that are unable to use due to defect from the manufacturer or service provider.
The bill still must pass the state Senate, and will not have immediate consequences for consumers outside of Illinois. At least it is a testament to the fact that lawmakers are finally standing up to the most oppressive character of most cellular contracts.
