Puppy lemon laws? You bet, but before you start wagging his tail, let's make one thing clear: These laws protect buyers of pets, no pets. States and cities have laws against animal cruelty, of course, but a more recent development is the adoption of laws designed to facilitate buyers from company to recover its money if this turns out to be pretty sick puppy.
All state laws that look to the purchaser the right to return a sick or dead cub for a refund or replacement. Most also give consumers the option of keeping the puppy, which is treated and get some level of reimbursement for veterinary expenses of the seller.
Have not yet been summaries of state laws, but we're working on it. If yours does not, however, consult with the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division of your state. You can find the address in our Directory of Consumer Protection.
